Adobe’s Flash Player has never performed as well in Mac OS X as it does on Windows-running PCs. The traditionally poor performance of Adobe’s plugin on the Mac has led many iPhone and iPad users to support Apple’s decision to keep Flash off of its mobile devices. While the upcoming Flash 10.1 does boast some significant performance improvements over its predecessors, the performance is still pretty terrible compared to h.264, which has access to hardware-accelerated video decoding via the GPUs in Macs.

On the Mac, I don’t use Opera’s browser. I use Safari myself. But you have to admire Opera’s “Chutzpah”. Not only have they made and submitted a browser to the iPhone app store that has no chance in hell of getting approved. They are drawing a line in the sand and daring Apple to cross it. This has never worked for anyone going up against Apple in the past. “At least not publicly.” But maybe Opera believes that this could be the time it does.

Opera your so full of wonderment.

Perhaps you think that with the FTC looking into the Google Voice App rejection or infinite evaluation process. You think that it may now be your chance.

It isn’t.

Not because you don’t make a good browser. It’s because your not Google.

Check out the story at macappers and the Opera Mini’s Demo Video below.

With the news networks spewing economic doom and gloom. The state of the economy has been on my mind and how I personally can cut back and prepare for the worst. Here are some universal tips all web designer/developer can consider.

1. If you have the means. Pay off your credit cards and start a savings account.

Eliminating debt is paramount. You can’t start saving if you owe Visa. If things go south your credit cards interest rate will go north. If you just make the minimum payment your just giving visa their cut and the principal will still be accruing interest.

Start saving money. Put a little back if you can from every check, You’ll feel a lot better with a monetary cushion if things get rocky.

2. Cut your expenses back as far as you can.

Do you really need that triple-shot, skinny, sugar-free latte? Isn’t that $4.50 you can save. Make some coffee with the coffee pot in the kitchen. You know the one with the layer of dust on it.

Instead of buying that fifty dollar console game. Play the stack of games you have next to the console system. More than half of which you never finished anyway.

If you rent movies and buy audio books both can be had for free at your public library.

Instead of getting away for the weekend. Go to the park for the day. it’s free and the fresh air will do you good.

3. Get your resume together and have your business cards.

Update your resume or draft one if you don’t have one. Update your portfolio pages with your latest stuff and eliminate anything that might be questionable.

4. Use and participate in internet social networks.

Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin are all social networks that can be joined and mined for contacts. One way to approach this is to find people and are in the web industry but specialize in areas you do not. That way you can create a feeling of synergy with your contacts.

I like twitter. The web design and developer community is great and friendly. They chat about what they are writing, what they are working on and they give a yell out to the community if they need work done they do not specialize in.

5. If you lose your job. Use that time to work on yourself.

You’ve lost your job. Lots of people in the startup arena have. Yahoo, Mahalo and Revision3. What do you do now besides the obvious of getting another job?

There is no replacement for self-development. If you improve yourself, the world around you will do the same.

If you code PHP. Get so good at coding a employer would be nuts not to hire you. Got an idea for a internet service? Build it. When the economy is down this when you build value. Value in that project you could never get to because the paying work was in the way. Value in yourself by learning, striving and developing.

Remember just because things are bad now they will get better and when that happens you’ll want to be ready.

Starting programming or simply refining your work flow can be a daunting task. Everyone has their set way of working and it’s the way that works best for them. This is a list of suggestions that can help coders of all levels and languages.

1. Start a code library and find a fast way to access it.

If you program and are not the strongest typist in the world. An option that will speed up your productive. Create a code library “sometimes referred to as snippets” of the code blocks you use the most.

I find this really speeds up production when you don’t have to repeatedly type the same code over and over again. When working in PHP having not to type.

$connection = mysql_connect(“localhost”,”root”,”password”);
@mysql_select_db(“database”, $connection);
$query = “INSERT INTO application (first_name, last_name, address, city, state, zipcode, email, birthday, home_phone, other_phone, home, time_at_address, payment, employment, employer, income, ssn, bankrupt, cosigner, confirmation, signup, timestamp) VALUES (‘$firstname’, ‘$lastname’, ‘$address’, ‘$city’, ‘$state’, ‘$zipcode’, ‘$email’, ‘$birthdate’, ‘$phone1′, ‘$phone2′, ‘$ownrent’, ‘$time_at_address’, ‘$payment’, ‘$employment’, ‘$employer’, ‘$income’, ‘$ssn’, ‘$bankrupt’, ‘$cosign’, ‘$confirmation’, ‘$optin’, ‘$timestamp’)”;

and just typing “php_connect_insert” is a real timesaver. Sure your going to have to take some of column names and values out or change them. But the structure and form I use and can easily navigate is instantly there.

Applications like Panic’s Coda, Micromate’s TextMate and Adobe Dreamweaver have this indispensable feature with a fast way to access it. You could also use a program like TextExpander by Smile on my Mac software that stores the snippets and makes them available system wide or to only the applications you designate.

2. Get good and know the language.

Ok this is blatantly obvious. The web is a fantastic resource to get you over a programming speed bump. But finding a good example of exactly what your trying to do takes time. There is no replacing being up on your programming chops to rocket though the code and get the project done. Developing yourself will always pay ten fold over what equipment you use.

3. Find someone that knows more about programming than you and find someone that knows less.

Having someone around you can bounce ideas and problems off of that has been in the game longer than you is one of the best ways to learn. Once learned teach that new info to the person who knows less than you. You’ll find that the process of teaching allows you to retain more of what you have learned than if you had not shared it.

4. Find a few easy to understand and easy to navigate sites for syntax reference.

I comb through php.net and mySQL.com sites on a regular basis. Those are the languages I use most and I was lucky that both these sites have tons of notes and forums. I love actionscript. But adobe’s site is the last place I go for help with it. It’s slow and the forums are not well trafficked. Flashkit.com and Actionscript.org are much more useful.

So that’s my list of programming tips. Comment below and add your own tip to the list.
