After raising the ire of its customers with what are believed to be overly expensive iPhone 3G plans, Canadian provider Rogers Wireless is allegedly being punished by Apple with fewer shipments.

Blogger Daniel Smith claims multiple sources, including a senior Rogers representative, claim that Apple has diverted a significant amount of its initial iPhone 3G Canadian deliveries to Europe in retribution for the carrier’s steep rate plans, which at similar prices offer a third fewer minutes and limited data compared to AT&T.

Stores may be getting just 10 to 20 iPhones each and are being told to “exercise caution” not to promise ample stock on launch day, according to the rumors.

At the same time, Rogers is also claimed to be promptly firing the part-time staff that had been hired to handle an expected deluge of customers at some stores.

macrumors.com is reporting on the subsidized iPhone pricing structure. Below is a summary from that article.

To Summarize:

iPhone 3G will launch in the U.S. on July 11th

$199 (8GB), $299 (16GB) represents subsidized iPhone 3G prices

If you are currently an iPhone AT&T customer or not currently an AT&T customer, you qualify for the subsidized pricing

If you are currently a non-iPhone AT&T customer, you will be subject to certain qualification criteria. AT&T’s “standard” upgrade criteria are posted here but may be subject to change.

If you don’t qualify, there will be a higher unsubsidized price for the iPhone 3G which will be announced before July 11th.

Speculation: While rumors have pegged AT&T’s subsidy at $325, it seems very unlikely that the unsubsidized price will be this high ($199+$325). Historically, canceling your existing mobile phone contract for the typical $175 early-termination fee would automatically qualify you for any future subsidized phones. As a result, we suspect the unsubsidized pricing will be about the same as the early-termination fee (about $199+$175 for 8GB).

Fortune reports that AT&T may be planning subsidize the iPhone to the tune of $200, reducing the cost of the entry-level 8GB to $199 with a two-year contract.

The lower retail price would likely attract more buyers and help AT&T scalp even more customers from competitors—something the iPhone has effectively done with up to 40% of buyers reportedly coming from other carriers.

Whether the $200 price reduction comes as a direct subsidy or in rebate form, Forbes speculates that only those purchasing directly from AT&T would be eligible.
